Approval of instructions for calculating hydrocarbon reserves, including those related to unconventional hydrocarbons

On the application of Souths Oil LLP regarding the discovery of a promising shale oil deposit in the contract area, occurring mainly in the Middle and Lower Jurassic shale oil-bearing rocks and the lack of an approved instruction for the calculation of unconventional (shale) hydrocarbon reserves, KAZENERGY and the Eurasian Engineering Association concluded a contract under which the Association undertook to develop the aforementioned document and subsequently transfer it to the authorized body for subsoil study free of charge.
The Association has done a lot of work, conducted a comprehensive analysis of the current state of “unconventional” oil, studied the potential for further technological development and influence on the global oil market, the experience of foreign countries in the calculation of “unconventional” oil reserves, selected a method of calculation of “unconventional” oil reserves taking into account the specificity of occurrence The work was done with involvement of highly qualified specialists of oil and gas industry, experts, analysts of the companies-members of the Association.
The Association has developed:

• Instruction for the calculation of mineral resources reserves, including those related to unconventional hydrocarbons
• Instruction for the calculation of the reserves of solid minerals
• Instruction for the estimation of underground water reserves
• Instruction for calculation of conventional hydrocarbon reserves
• Methodology for the Classification of Mineral Reserves and Inferred Mineral Resources.

Instructions and Methodology were approved by the Order of the Acting Minister of Industry and Infrastructural Development of the RK, registered by the Ministry of Justice on February 4, 2023.
